Halifax 7 Roundhegians 34
The future is bright despite cup loss
A young Halifax team put in a spirited display before going down 34-7 to Yorkshire Three outfit Roundhegians in the Aire-Wharfe Cup.
Halifax played the same opponents in the plate competition 12 months ago – and had found themselves 41-0 down at half-time before going on to lose 62-29.
However this time around, Halifax showed more fight against a side pushing for promotion to Yorkshire Two - with academy products Joe Gallagher, Fergus Emmerson, Charlie Hyland, Elliot Mercer, Joe Francis, Luke Sturman, Niall McSharry, Dom Georgiou, Christian Heyhoe and Ben Maxwell all handed their chance.
In fact, Roundhegians needed a late salvo of tries under the lights at Ovenden Park to finally make sure of the result after Halifax threatened an upset.
McSharry’s try and Paul Knapping’s conversion had seen Halifax level at 7-7 after half-hour – while the home side were only 12-7 down at the break.
However a penalty extended that lead to 15-7 after the interval – and try as they might, Halifax just couldn’t find a way back into the match.
And three tries in the final 10 minutes put the game beyond doubt.
The young Halifax side can be pleased with their efforts, though, with the future bright at the club.
